Learning to Fall was a virtual world ‘happening’, featuring four artists each operating avatars in Second Life from their respective studios in Malibu Beach, Rotterdam, Brooklyn and Toronto. Kim Mitseff appeared as Cherry Daiquiri, Inge Hoonte as Nar Dufaux, Noe Kidder as Nar Darwinian and Lynne Heller as Nar Duell; sound by Dennis Schaefer/Douglas Story; programming support by Desdemona Enfield. This virtual performance was hosted in the OCADU simulated gallery space, as part of an artist residency, and was featured in Inge Hoonte and Noe Kidder’s Under/Up the Stairs, a popup art project that took place on virtual and real staircases in Brooklyn, Toronto, Rotterdam, and Second Life on May 26, 2012.

In this virtual happening, Nar Duell - a naive but intrepid super-heroine—learns to fall and gains a new perspective on life. Previously in her last adventure of the series “The Adventures of Nar Duell in Second Life”, she had set out to experience the seven deadly sins in Second Life within five minutes, but only achieved two and a half. Although unsuccessful in fulfilling all the transgressions, the subsequent performance, Learning to Fall, depicts Nar seeking the advice and premonition of her psychic BFF Cherry Daiquiri who sits above a sky blue staircase with the inscription: "...heaven or hell." As Nar ascends, bubbles float up from the steps and guide her path. Searching to find her way forward after failure, Nar resumes the adventure by endlessly ascending and descending a celestial staircase—and ultimately meeting her destiny. This piece further emphasizes a personal narrative approach to making as it centres on repetition—stomping upstairs—within unpredictable and transitory surroundings.
